Valheim console commands

Last checked:

Valheim has two kinds of console commands. Admin commands (kick, ban, save) work on a dedicated server for players on its admin list. Dev commands (god mode, spawning items, flying) are cheats: they work in single-player and in worlds you host from the game menu, not on a dedicated server. This page covers both, plus how to make yourself an admin.

Start a Valheim server

How to open the console

  1. In Steam, right-click Valheim → Properties → General → Launch options.
  2. Type -console and close the window.
  3. Start the game and press F5 in a world to open the console. Type help to see what your game accepts there.

Admin commands on a dedicated server

Your SteamID has to be on the server's admin list (see the next section). Open the console with F5 while you're connected.

CommandWhat it does
kick [name or ID]Kicks a player off the server
ban [name or ID]Bans a player. Bans are saved in bannedlist.txt
unban [ID]Lifts a ban
bannedLists banned players
saveSaves the world now

Tip: run save before you restart or stop the server.

How to make yourself admin

  1. Find your SteamID64. It's the 17-digit number that starts with 7656119. Steam shows it under Account details, and it's also in your profile URL if you never set a custom one.
  2. Open adminlist.txt on the server, in the same folder as your world files. On a Packyard server that's .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim in the panel's file manager. Put each ID on its own line.
  3. Restart the server so the change is sure to take effect.

To make the server invite-only, put SteamIDs in permittedlist.txt the same way. Once that file isn't empty, only listed players can join.

Dev commands (cheats): what devcommands does

Type devcommands in the console to turn cheats on. On a dedicated server, being an admin doesn't turn them on: they work in single-player and in worlds hosted from the game. Since Valheim 1.0, using dev commands flags your character and world and blocks achievements.

Run a Valheim server your group can always reach

A Packyard Valheim server is a password-protected dedicated server for PC (Steam). It runs on the same panel and backups as our Minecraft servers. You edit adminlist.txt in the panel's file manager, with no FTP client needed. Players join a permanent address with a name and port that stays the same, and there's no port forwarding on your side. Servers run in Seattle (US West).

FAQ

Why does devcommands not work on my server?

Cheats are for single-player and game-hosted worlds. Admin rights on a dedicated server let you kick, ban, unban and save, but they don't turn on cheats.

Do I need to restart after editing adminlist.txt?

Some servers pick the change up on their own, but a restart is the sure way.

Does using dev commands affect achievements?

Yes. Since 1.0 it flags the character and world, and achievements are blocked for them.

Can Xbox players join a Packyard Valheim server?

No. Our Valheim servers are PC on Steam only, with no crossplay.
