How much RAM does your modpack server need?

Last checked:

Most guides give one RAM number per pack, but the right size depends on how many people play. Here's the recommended RAM for 17 packs at three group sizes, and which packs are held back by CPU rather than memory.

Quick answer

6–8 GB for Cobblemon and most Create packs with a few friends. 10–12 GB for kitchen-sink packs like ATM9/10 and Vault Hunters. 4–6 GB for lighter or older packs. Add about 1 GB for every 3 extra players. For most packs, extra RAM past the recommended size brings little benefit.

How we worked these out

The 2–5 player figures are the consensus of pack listings and public server guides, checked October 2026 (sources at the bottom of this page). Almost no source gives per-pack figures by player count, so the 6–10 and 10–20 columns are our estimates: about +1 GB for every 3 extra players on modded servers, and for GTNH about +0.5 GB per extra player early game and +1 GB per player late game, rounded to normal plan sizes. Pack updates change these numbers.

Packs where RAM won't fix lag

Minecraft runs most of the world on one main thread. If that thread can't keep up, adding RAM does nothing. These are the packs where that bites:

What actually helps on these: a faster CPU, pre-generating your world (Chunky works for most packs) so exploring players aren't generating terrain live, keeping chunk loaders under control, and a performance mod like spark to find what's lagging. Only add RAM if spark shows you're actually short on memory.

How to tell if you need more RAM

Install spark and run /spark health and /spark profiler. If memory stays near the limit after garbage collection, or you see out-of-memory crashes, size up. If memory is fine but the server falls behind, the issue is CPU or chunk generation: pre-generate with Chunky and check what spark flags.

On Packyard

We install these packs for you: Cobblemon, Cobblemon (NeoForge), All the Mods 10: To the Sky, RLCraft, Create+, Slimes Adventure, Fabric (no modpack), NeoForge (no modpack), Forge (no modpack) and Vanilla (Paper). Each one shows a recommended size on the order page. The order page sells up to 5 GB right now; larger sizes come back as we add capacity.

$1.50 per GB a month ($5 minimum), USD plus applicable taxes. Beta: 50% off for servers started by 6 December 2026. Open to the US & Canada (outside Quebec).

FAQ

Is 4 GB enough for a modpack?

For light or older packs with 2–3 players, often yes. For most 1.18+ packs, start at 6 GB.

How much RAM for Cobblemon?

6–8 GB for 2–5 players, about 8 GB for 6–10, 10–12 GB for 10–20.

How much RAM for All the Mods 10?

10 GB for a small group, 12 GB for 6–10 players, 14–16 GB for bigger groups. It's also CPU-heavy, so watch your automation.

Does more RAM fix lag?

Only if you're actually out of memory. Most modded lag comes from the main thread, which depends on CPU, chunk generation and machines.

How much RAM do I need per player?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 GB for every 3 extra players on modded servers, and more on heavy packs like GTNH late game.
