How to make a Valheim server
Last checked:
There are two ways to play Valheim with friends on a world that isn't tied to one player's game: run a dedicated server on your own computer, or rent one that stays online for you. This guide covers both.
Option 1: run it on your own PC
- Install the dedicated server. In Steam, open Library, switch the filter to include Tools, and install "Valheim Dedicated Server". It's free if you own Valheim.
- Set the name, world and password. Open
start_headless_server.batin the server folder and edit the name, world and password. The password needs at least 5 characters and can't contain the server name. - Start it. Run the .bat file and leave the window open. The world is only online while it runs.
- Let friends in. Forward UDP ports 2456–2457 on your router to your PC. Friends join with your public IP and port 2456 (Join game → Add server), then enter the password.
The catch: your PC has to stay on whenever anyone plays, everyone who joins can see your home IP, if your home IP changes your friends need the new one, and backups are up to you.
Option 2: get one that stays online
A Valheim dedicated server for PC on Steam (no crossplay), password-protected, on the same panel and backups as our Minecraft servers. You get a permanent address with a name and a port, and the exact one is in your order email. No port forwarding.
How much RAM?
We recommend 4 GB for 2–5 players, and that's the size preselected on the order page. On the order page you can pick 3, 4, or 5 GB right now.
Price
$1.50 per GB of RAM per month, with a $5 minimum (up to 3 GB). A 4 GB Valheim server is $6 a month.
Beta: 50% off for servers started by 6 December 2026, so 4 GB is $3 a month. We'll email you at least 14 days before the price changes. All prices in USD, plus applicable taxes. Money-back on your first payment within 72 hours.
The beta is open to the US & Canada (outside Quebec). Beta slots are limited right now.
FAQ
Can Xbox or Game Pass players join?
Not on Packyard: our servers are PC on Steam only, with no crossplay.
Why can't my friend connect?
Check that they're using the right port and password, and that their game is up to date. The server and every player need the same Valheim version.
