How to add mods to an Aternos server

Last checked:

Aternos is a free way to run a Minecraft server, and it can run mods. You don't upload mods yourself, though: you pick them from Aternos's own library. Here's how to do it, plus what to do when the mod you want isn't in that library.

Browse modpacks

Step 1: pick a mod loader that matches your mods

On your server's Software page, choose the loader your mods are made for (Forge, NeoForge or Fabric) and the Minecraft version they support. A Fabric mod won't load on Forge, and a 1.20.1 mod won't load on 1.21.1.

Step 2: install mods from the Mods page

Open Mods, search for the mod and install the build that matches your loader and version. Aternos's library is built from CurseForge and Modrinth.

Step 3: add dependencies

Many mods need a library mod to run (Fabric API, Architectury, Cloth Config and so on). Aternos often lists them, but check the mod's own CurseForge or Modrinth page for the full list. A missing dependency is the most common reason a modded server won't start. If it crashes after you removed a mod, see Aternos mods missing after deleting? Fix the crash.

Step 4: give your players the same mods

For most mods, every player needs the same mods at the same versions in their own launcher (CurseForge app, Modrinth app or Prism). Server-only mods are the exception.

Modpacks on Aternos

On the Software page you can install a whole modpack instead (from CurseForge, Modrinth, ATLauncher or the FTB App). You get one modpack at a time, and you can't add or change individual mods or configs inside it.

Plugins vs mods

Plugins (for Paper or Spigot) and mods (for Forge, NeoForge or Fabric) are different things. Plugins only work on plugin software, and mods only work on a mod loader. Pick the software first, then add the matching kind.

When your mod isn't in the library

Aternos only lets you install mods from its library, so you can't upload a mod or a custom modpack you downloaded yourself. If you need one, you have two options: request it from Aternos, or move to a host where you upload files yourself. More on that in custom mods on Aternos: can you upload your own?

Upload your own mods on Packyard

On a Packyard Fabric, NeoForge or Forge server (no modpack), you bring your own mods: upload them in the panel's file manager or over SFTP. If you'd rather start from a ready pack, you can choose Cobblemon, Cobblemon (NeoForge), Cobbleverse, All the Mods 10: To the Sky, All the Mods 10, Vault Hunters 3rd Edition, RLCraft, Create+ or Slimes Adventure. Your players join a permanent address (my-server.play.packyard.ca) that stays the same. Servers run in Seattle (US West).
