How to make a Terraria server

Last checked:

You can play Terraria with friends in two ways: run the server on your own computer, or rent one that stays online for you. This guide covers both, so you can choose.

Option 1: run it on your own PC

  1. Find the dedicated server. The PC version of Terraria includes it. In Steam, right-click Terraria → Manage → Browse local files, and open TerrariaServer.exe.
  2. Pick or create a world. Choose an existing world, or create a new one and pick its size and difficulty.
  3. Set the basics. Choose the max players, keep port 7777 and set a password.
  4. Let friends in. Forward port 7777 on your router to your PC, then give your friends your public IP, the port and the password.
  5. Keep it running. The world is only online while that window stays open.

The catch: your PC has to stay on whenever anyone plays, everyone who joins can see your home IP, if your home IP changes your friends have to get the new one, and backups are up to you.

Option 2: get one that stays online

The vanilla Terraria PC server (no tModLoader at the moment), password-protected, on the same panel and backups as our Minecraft servers. You get a permanent address with a name and a port, and the exact one is in your order email. No port forwarding.

How do my friends join?

In Terraria: Multiplayer → Join via IP. Put the name in the IP box and the port in the port box, then enter your server password.

No. Our servers are for the PC version.

Can I use tModLoader?

On your own PC, yes. On Packyard, not at the moment. Email hello@packyard.ca if you need it.

Can I move my self-hosted world to Packyard later?

Yes. Stop your server, upload your .wld file into the saves/Worlds folder with the panel's web file manager and name it world.wld, then start the server again.
