How to make an RLCraft server
Last checked:
RLCraft is hard enough without fighting the server setup too. You can run the server on your own computer or rent one that's installed for you. This guide covers both.
Option 1: run it on your own PC
- Install Java 8. RLCraft runs on Minecraft 1.12.2, and 1.12.2 servers need Java 8. Newer Java versions won't start it.
- Get the server pack. On RLCraft's CurseForge page, open Files and download the server pack that matches the version your players have. Unzip it into an empty folder.
- Install Forge if needed. If the server pack doesn't already include the Forge server, run the Forge 1.12.2 installer it names and choose "Install server" in the same folder.
- Accept the EULA and give it memory. Run the server once, set
eula=trueineula.txt, then start it again with enough memory through-Xmx(see the RAM section below). - Let friends in. Forward TCP port 25565 on your router to your PC and give your friends your public IP.
The catch: your PC has to stay on whenever anyone plays, everyone who joins can see your home IP, your friends need the new address whenever your home IP changes, and backups are up to you. With RLCraft, a restore after a bad death or a dragon can matter more than usual.
Option 2: get one installed for you
Pick RLCraft when you order and we set up the server for you, with the right loader and Java version. No port forwarding. Your friends join at yourserver.play.packyard.ca, and that address stays the same.
- Automatic daily backups, plus a one-click restore. Restores are free.
- Your full RAM is reserved for you whenever your server is running.
How much RAM?
We recommend 5 GB for a small group, and that's the size preselected on the order page. The order page sells 5 GB right now. Public guides put 2–5 players at about 6 GB. Most RLCraft load comes from mobs and exploring new terrain, so pre-generating your world helps. How much RAM do I need?
Price
$1.50 per GB of RAM per month, with a $5 minimum (up to 3 GB). A 5 GB RLCraft server is $7.50 a month.
Beta: 50% off for servers started by 6 December 2026, so 5 GB is $3.75 a month. We'll email you at least 14 days before the price changes. All prices in USD, plus applicable taxes. Money-back on your first payment within 72 hours.
The beta is open to the US & Canada (outside Quebec).
FAQ
Why won't my server start?
Most often it's the wrong Java version. 1.12.2 needs Java 8.
Why can't my friend join?
They need the same RLCraft version as the server, on Java Edition.
Can I move my self-hosted world to Packyard later?
Yes. Small files go through the panel's web file manager; for a larger world, send us a download link at hello@packyard.ca.
